Money in a bank account
What Ghanaian banks pay on savings, and the conditions that change it
Five banks publish what they pay a saver, on their websites or in their tariff guides. Most attach something that changes the number — a balance you must hold before you earn anything, a withdrawal that forfeits the interest, or a rate quoted above a figure they do not publish. First Atlantic’s 2% comes with no condition stated.
What they pay, and what they want first

Minimum: GH¢1,000 to earn interest
Platinum Investment Savings
Consolidated Bank Ghana

What the government pays
The 91-day Treasury bill last cleared at 4.64% a year (2026-10-05).
No minimum balance to earn it, no withdrawal condition, and no monthly fee. Ecobank’s TBill4All sells them from GHS 5 through mobile money without a bank account; IC’s Liquidity Fund holds much the same instruments from GH₵1.
The headline rates are for people who already have money
A saver with GHS 500 earns nothing on Republic’s Optimizer, which needs GHS 15,000 before it pays at all, and nothing on Fidelity’s Reserve account, which needs GH¢500. The same GHS 500 in a Treasury bill earns the rate above from the first day.
That is not a criticism of the banks — a small balance costs them more to administer than it earns. It is a reason for a saver to know what else exists.
What it takes to open one, at every bank

Five things to ask before you open one
- 1What balance do I need before I earn anything? This is the question, not the rate. Several of the accounts above pay nothing at all below a threshold.
- 2Is it per annum, and when is it applied? A rate credited quarterly on the minimum monthly balance is not the same as one paid on what you actually held.
- 3What happens if I withdraw? Several of these accounts reduce or forfeit interest on a withdrawal, and one does so for six months after opening.
- 4Is there a monthly fee? A GHS 20 monthly charge on a GHS 1,000 balance costs more than 2% a year pays.
- 5And what does the government pay? Treasury bills are the benchmark, they are available from GHS 5, and a bank account paying less than the bill is worth knowing about before you open it rather than after.
