Compared on the premium over the gold in each coin, paid once when you buy. Bank of Ghana sets it; there is no annual management or custody charge while you hold the coin. The NewGold ETF works differently: it charges 0.30% a year, set out in its issuer’s disclosure document.
These are charged in different shapes
One of these costs 0.30% every year, plus 1.5% to 2.5% to buy it and the same to sell it through a stockbroker. The others cost a premium once, when you buy, and 0.15% to sell back. Which works out cheaper depends on how long you hold it, and on what your broker charges.
- 1 oz Ghana Gold Coin at 3.58% once becomes the cheaper choice after about 2 years with a broker charging 1.5% each way, or from the start with one charging 2.5%.
- ½ oz Ghana Gold Coin at 4.83% once becomes the cheaper choice after about 7 years with a broker charging 1.5% each way, or from the start with one charging 2.5%.
- ¼ oz Ghana Gold Coin at 7.75% once becomes the cheaper choice after about 16 years with a broker charging 1.5% each way, or after about 10 years with one charging 2.5%.
Broker costs are set by Rule 66 of the Ghana Stock Exchange’s Trading Rules: a commission of 0.80% to 1.80%, negotiated with you, plus 0.70% in levies. A bank’s fee for the coin (GH¢50 a coin at three banks) is not included here. Ask your broker where in the range you will pay.

Both figures are the same purchase. They differ only by what the cedi did against the dollar. Gold is bought as protection against a falling currency; over this period the cedi rose, so it guarded against something that didn’t happen — and the premium was paid either way.

What this page doesn’t show
- What comes next. Every figure here is what has already happened, over the period stated. Ghanaian rates have fallen hard — the 91-day Treasury bill paid over 20% in early 2025 and around 5% by August 2026 — so a return earned in one rate environment says little about the next.
- Tax, where the issuer states it. Bank of Ghana states the coin is exempt from VAT and that capital gains on it are not taxed under current Ghanaian law. This records what the issuer publishes and is not tax advice.
- How you open the rest. Eleven Ghanaian providers set out what you need to open an account. For any other, ask which documents they need, whether a Ghanaian bank account comes first, and whether you can apply from abroad. See which providers publish what. Anything a provider sends us is published here, cited and dated.
- Tax. Ghanaian withholding on investment income hasn’t been verified, so it’s missing here rather than assumed to be nil. You’ll keep less than these charges alone suggest.
- Everything else. What you get back when you sell is not shown here — a coin’s buy-back price, or the ETF’s price on the exchange less brokerage. Read the issuer’s own terms before deciding.
- Fee history starts when our records start, not when the fee did.
